On the pass through the mountains, the Serb soldiers took Winner to a chapel. The interior was covered in paintings of saints and angels: huge, robed figures, sometimes with wings, invariably with haloes, stood, frozen in solemn gestures, around the upper part of the walls. The lower part of the walls were closely packed with icons in frames, or prints, including Leonardo’s Last Supper. What could be gilded, had been.
